PSE-Advocacy

Did you know the PTA is the first child advocacy group founded in Texas? Our mission is “to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.”

2027 is a legislative year, and there will be great opportunities to advocate at the state and local levels.

Two things you can begin doing now:

  1. Our school district is facing a $26M deficit. Follow the SBISD Board Meetings and add meetings to your calendar. Videos are livestreamed and recorded. The Houston Chronicle sends out AI transcripts after the video is uploaded. First workshop meeting is on Monday (8/10) at 6pm.
  2. Plan to go to Austin on Monday, February 22, 2027, for Rally Day, when all the Texas PTAs meet at the Capitol to advocate together. We will make carpooling plans and possibly charter a bus - more on this to come. This is an important way to show strength in numbers and meet with our representatives.

SBISD Board Meeting Highlights 9/14/26

9/25/2026 1:23 pm

  • Discussed unfunded and underfunded mandates from the State that impacts why we have a projected deficit of $25-30M budget deficit.

    • Examples: safety and security requirements, special education services, compliance and tracking. See the presentation here.

  • Discussed technology use in classrooms and instruction and how it is used in state-mandated testing along with cybersecurity and efforts to ensure content is appropriate for students.

    • There was one public comment about this area and concern about Chromebooks being a distraction more than a help with learning.

  • Board members discussed potential legislative issues. Last session the advocacy to raise the basic allotment per student did not result in a large increase from the legislature. The board discussed if they should consider requesting funding for specific “buckets” versus the basic allotment.

  • Approved the certificate of compliance with Senate Bill 12 (passed during the last legislative session), which prohibits employees from “assigning or engaging in DEI duties,” restricts employees from supporting students who are socially transitioning, restricts “gender fluidity” from instructional materials, requires parental consent for mental health services, among other requirements. Read more here.
